Conservation
Part of the mandate of the Region of Waterloo Museums and Archives is to preserve the artifacts, belongings, and archival materials in our collections. Our Conservator ensures that these items are safely handled and stored, appropriately displayed, and treated as required. Conservation treatment involves scientific examination, cleaning, stabilization, and repairs.
They are also responsible for preventive conservation activities across our sites. This entails determining light, temperature, and humidity levels in our artifact/archival storage areas and exhibition galleries, regularly monitoring our buildings for signs of pests, and training our staff in the safe handling of artifacts, belongings, and archival materials.
Our Conservator documents any items that are loaned to us for exhibit purposes or that we are loaning to other institutions, and fully documents any treatments done to the items in our collections for future reference.
We do not offer conservation services to the public, but are happy to answer questions or provide guidance about how to preserve your family heirlooms and treasures.
Please contact our Conservator with any preservation-related questions.
